A short time in braces is worth a lifetime of straight teeth. To ensure that your smile stays healthy, it is important to take care of your mouth. Use wax if your brackets are rubbing, floss or use a waterpik at least once a day and brush 2-3 times per day. If your mouth is sore, rinse with warm salt water. Stay well hydrated while your braces are on and be sure to avoid drinks that contain sugar and regular chewing gum.

Diet drinks can be consumed anytime but heavy sugar-based drinks as regular soda and sweet tea predispose teeth to bacteria/plaque build-up and tooth decay. They should not be consumed while wearing braces.

To help adjust to braces, carry a small container with a few mouth care essentials so you can eat and drink anywhere and not have to worry about food being stuck in your braces. Drinking water while you eat will help wash food away.
